8: IDENTIFYING COUPLESThe couples who are facing the front or back of the room -- toward or away from where the caller is standing -- are called the Head Couples, or simply Heads. The other two couples are the Sides.
![]() The couples in a square are also sometimes referred to by "couple number". The couple with their backs to the caller is the #1 couple. The couple to their right is the #2 couple. The next couple, continuing around the square to each couple's right, is #3, and then #4. The next couple after #4, continuing in the same direction, is of course #1 again.
![]() So "couples 1 and 3" is another way of saying "head couples", and "couples 2 and 4" is another way of saying "side couples". The two dancers in each couple are each other's partner. But when the dancers are arranged in this square formation, each dancer also has somebody on the other side, "around the corner" of the square. This person is called his/her corner. Each boy's corner is the girl to his left. Each girl's corner is the boy to her right.
