5: LARGER FORMATIONS

At Advanced, counter rotate calls are applied only to four-person formations -- usually either the center four or the two halves of the square when the word Split is used.

In the Challenge programs, the call Counter Rotate can be used to apply the same kind of action to larger formations. By default, it applies to the square as a whole. In that case, the center point around which everybody is moving is the center point of the whole square (sometimes called the "flag pole center").

The caller can ask all the dancers to move around the center point of the square, or just some of them (e.g., the girls, or the head boys, or the centers).

The call Counter Rotate can be applied to a great variety of eight-person formations. We will just look at a few examples, to illustrate how the same basic principles are used.
