4.4: FACING COUPLES

Up to now we have only considered situations where either all the dancers are moving in the same direction (an ordinary box, an ordinary diamond, a two-faced line) or where the dancers going in opposite directions are moving in different circles (a wave, a facing diamond). In all of those cases, everybody can move along their own circular path without any chance of collision.

If dancers are moving in the same circle but in opposite directions, then the right-shoulder rule applies. They will pass right shoulders to avoid colliding, but they must still end up in the spot and with the facing direction called for in a counter rotate.

In the case of a box consisting of facing couples, the beau (dancer on the left, holding partner with the right hand) will be turning to the right. The belle (dancer on the right, holding with the left hand) will be turning to the left. They each still move one position around the box, and turn 1/4.

The result is the same as if they did a Pass Thru followed by a 1/4 In.
