This "quick tutorial" introduces the general idea of a call and explains the most common cases. It does not explain or illustrate all cases. For additional details and/or examples, refer to the links in the "MORE INFO" box.
The call Swing Thru is normally done in a wave of four dancers. First those who can within that four-dancer group turn by the right. Then those who can within that four-dancer group turn by the left. This is true even if there are two four-dancer waves end-to-end, forming a "tidal wave". The dancers in each half stay in their own half.
For a Grand Swing Thru the whole wave of more than four dancers (usually eight dancers) is treated as a single wave. Everyone who can turns by the right, and then everyone who can turns by the left.
Note that the only dancers for whom this makes a difference are the ones who might -- or might not -- turn in the very center. For everybody else, a Grand Swing Thru is exactly the same as a Swing Thru.
