Ladies Chain starts from "normal" facing couples, with the boy on the left and the girl on the right. The girls "chain" across by extending their right hands to each other and pulling by. When they get to the other side, they do a Courtesy Turn with the boy on that side, and end facing back in.
But the boy doesn't wait for the girl to get all the way over to his side before moving. Instead, he anticipates the Courtesy Turn by stepping backward and extending his right arm, so that the girl can walk directly from the pull by into the Courtesy Turn without stopping.
This sort of Ladies Chain, done by just two couples, is also referred to as a Two Ladies Chain. From a squared set, with four couples facing in, they can do a Four Ladies Chain. The action is the same, except that instead of pulling by the girls make a right-handed star to get to the opposite boy.
